Neeti Shastra screening at 28th KIFF: 'Singing will remain my first love,' says singer-turned actor Iman Chakraborty
National award winning singer Iman Chakraborty ventured into acting with filmmaker Arunava Khasnobis' Neeti Shastra, which is an anthology film where each story deals with the inner conflict of humans concerning justice, ethics and morality, especially with regard to death. As the film was screened at the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF), India Blooms correspondent Souvik Ghosh catches up with the singer-turned actor at West Bengal film centre Nandan...
Q. Tell us about your experience of venturing into acting?
A. A lot of positive things happened in my life through social media. Anupam Roy (singer) had offered me work after listening to my song on Facebook. Even Arunava (Arunava Khasnobis, director) felt I could justify a character on-screen seeing one of my pictures on social media.
I felt like trusting Arunava. Being a singer, I have created an image in front of my audience. So I didn't want to do something on-screen that would hamper my well-crafted image. I took the challenge of playing my role. I did my homework. But one of the biggest challenges was acting alongside a skillful actor like Bidipta Chakraborty.

Q. How do you feel getting your first film as an actor screened at the KIFF?
A. The Kolkata International Film Festival is a prestigious festival where iconic national and international films are screened. People remain enthusiastic to watch films here. So for me, becoming a part of the festival and getting my film screened at KIFF gives me immense joy.
Q. Why would you say Neeti Shastra is a must watch for the audience?
A. Everyone should watch Neeti Shastra because we don't come across such a work frequently. So my best wishes to my team and the director.
Q. When did you realise you could give acting a try?
A. I feel music is also a kind of acting. I believe a singer too possesses an acting self.

Q. What was your reaction to seeing yourself on big screens?
A. I wanted to play a glamorous role quite contrary to what I was being offered (laughs). I was without any makeup in this film. In the course of doing this film, I have realised the hardship an actor goes through to make something on the big screen.
Q. How often can we see you as an actor now?
A. I will work as an actor if I get suitable offers. But singing will remain my first love.
