A lower court in Sabroom town of South Tripura district has sentenced a motorcycle rider to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 in connection with a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a college teacher.
Sources said that the incident took place under Sabroom police station in South Tripura district on December 30, 2022 last and when in the afternoon 5.30 PM on National Highway-08 near Jalefa Shastri colony, College teacher Kirti Chakraborty of Michael Madhusudan Dutta College of Sabroom, was walking along the left side of the road with her husband, Tapan Kumar Roy, when a motorcycle bearing registration number TR03-E-8046 dashed her from their back in heavy speed.
After the tragic road mishap, firefighters from Sabroom Fire station rushed to the spot and shifted the injured teacher to Sabroom Sub-Divisional Hospital. However, after preliminary examination and treatment, the attending doctor declared her dead.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Sabroom police station launched an investigation and registered a case. After examining 19 witnesses during the trial, Additional Sessions Judge Asit Debnath of Sabroom Subdivision on Saturday convicted the accused, Gautam Das, and sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000. The court further ordered that in default of payment of the fine, the convict would have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment.
