Police on Wednesday have arrested a husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law in connection with the death of a young housewife who suffered severe burn injuries at Bhabanipur under Jatrapur police station of Sepahijala district.
The deceased housewife identified as Joyita Sarkar (23), allegedly tolerated prolonged physical and mental torture after her marriage and on Sunday, she tried to commit suicide by pouring Kerosene oil on her body.
After the incident, Joyita’s relatives lodged a written complaint at Jatrapur police station against her husband Bipad Sarkar (35), mother-in-law Jharna Sarkar (54), and father-in-law Parimal Sarkar.
Based on the complaint, police arrested all three accused from their residence at Bhabanipur on Wednesday.
Family sources alleged that Joyita had been subjected to continuous abuse since her marriage. Her relatives further claimed that her husband, who worked in Chennai, would allegedly torture her whenever he returned home. The family also stated that prolonged domestic unrest and abuse had left the young woman mentally distressed for a long time.
Amid the ongoing turmoil, Joyita allegedly attempted suicide by setting herself on fire last Sunday. She was rescued in critical condition and admitted to GB Hospital in Agartala for treatment. However, she succumbed to her injuries on Monday night while undergoing treatment.
The tragic incident has triggered widespread reactions in the area. Police are also investigating whether any other mystery or circumstances are linked to the case.
The incident is particularly heartbreaking as Joyita was the mother of a minor son and daughter within five years of marriage. The children are reportedly too young to comprehend the tragedy and are currently staying close to their grandmother.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jatrapur police station Parthanath Bhowmik said that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. The three arrested persons are being interrogated, and police are examining all possible angles related to the case.
