Opposition LF, Congress seeks DGP’s intervention to stop violence, impartial rule of police

Expressing serious concern over the large-scale statewide violence, the opposition CPI (M) and Congress on Monday seek the intervention of DGP Amitabh Ranjan and concrete steps by police administration to stop post-poll violence.

On Monday, a delegation of senior CPI(M)  AND Congress leaders including Left Front convener Narayan Kar, Manik Dey, Ashish Kumar Saha, CPI leader Milan Baidya and Forward leader Raghunath Sarkar and RSP leader Dipak Deb met the DGP and submitted a deputation demanding immediate police action to stop violence upon opposition supporters.

Later, speaking with media persons LF convener Narayan Kar said that from the moment the BJP got the majority in the counting of votes in assembly elections on March 2nd, the entire state sparked an unprecedented backlash of terror and intimidation.

“In the name of celebration of victory by the unruly workers let loose unbridled attacks with inhuman ferocity on the people particularly targeting the opposition leaders, workers and supporters that resulted in loss and destruction of huge number of properties, physical attacks on hundreds of persons many of whom had to undertake treatment in different hospital,” said Kar.

He said that till now there are reports of more than one thousand such incidents, where the houses of the opposition supporters have been extensively ransacked , looted and destroyed everything inside the house and many houses were set on fire. Even in many cases, the fire fighters were prevented from rushing till the houses were fully gutted into ashes, said Kar and added that in many cases domestic animals, vehicles, motorbikes, rubber plantations were burnt up or cut down and along ransacking and looting of hundreds of shops.

While speaking with media Congress leader Ashish Kumar Saha alleged that in many areas BJP workers are extorting huge amounts of money from the opposition supporters in the name of celebrating their victory and many habitants were forced to stay in the jungle out of fear.

Many party offices of the Left parties and the Congress were crushed down or set on fire, said Saha and added that in a word, a complete lawlessness prevailed in the state from March 2nd.

He also said that police in many places are trying to take control over the situation, but they don’t dare to arrest any perpetrator because they have attacked the ruling party.

They questioned the rule of police over the growing incident of violence, the LF and Congress leaders said that ‘in a democratic system of governance election is indispensable. And in an election it is natural, one may win defeating others. But democracy does not permit pushing the lives of thousands of people into hell in the name of celebrating the victory of the winner, but unfortunately, this is happening in Tripura.

Considering the present circumstances and to take control of the situation and restore peace and tranquility in the state, the police must take a key role and urged the DGP to direct all the police officials to act upon in an unbiased manner without being interfered with by any political personality.

The opposition leaders have also demanded that all the incidents of attacks carried out since March 2nd last must be suo-moto registered in concerned police stations with appropriate legal steps against all miscreants involved in the violence and immediate measures should be initiated to adequately compensate the victim families along with necessary security cover.
