Tension prevailed at IGM Hospital in Agartala on Friday after the death of a pregnant woman, with family members alleging medical negligence and absence of specialist doctors due to the Eid holiday on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Bibha Debnath (34), wife of Pankaj Debnath and a resident of the Amtali area under West Tripura district.
Sources said that one Bibha Debnath was admitted to IGM Hospital in a critical condition on Thursday afternoon. However, the family alleged that no senior specialist doctor was available at the hospital due to the Eid holidays and that only junior doctors were attending patients at the time.
Attending junior doctors said that the patient party despite her suffering from tremendous pregnancy pain, the alleged junior doctors suggested to the family that she will deliver her baby through normal delivery and they will not perform the caesarean delivery.
When the visiting doctor on Friday morning tried to check the lady, they declared that the patient had already died. Hearing her sudden collapse, the relatives of the patient started crying and alleged that their patient died only because she was unable to tolerate unbearable pregnancy pain due to negligence of an on-duty medical officer.
Following her death, angry relatives staged protests inside the hospital premises, accusing the hospital authorities of negligence in treatment.
On receiving information, personnel from the West Women police station rushed to the hospital and initiated an investigation into the incident.
