Two youths from Bihar were arrested by the police of Amtali police station of West Tripura district for allegedly snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman in the ADC Village area under Srinagar police station.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at Tailarbond in ADC Village. According to reports, the two accused entered the house of elderly resident Radharani Debbarma on the pretext of cleaning utensils. At the time of the incident, no male members were present in the house.

Taking advantage of the situation, the accused allegedly snatched a gold chain from the elderly woman and fled from the spot on a motorcycle. Hearing her cries for help, local residents immediately informed people at Kanchanmala Bazaar and asked them to help intercept the suspects.

Acting swiftly, local residents at Kanchanmala Bazaar kept watch for the accused. After some time, the two youths entered the market area on a motorcycle at high speed, where they were detained by locals before police arrived.

Police from Amtali police station rushed to the spot and recovered the stolen gold chain along with the motorcycle bearing registration number BR-39AH-8350, which was allegedly used in the crime.

Later in the evening, Parimal Debbarma, son of the victim, lodged a written complaint against the two accused.

Sources said the same youths had allegedly carried out similar snatching incidents in the Baroitila and Shivbari areas of Amtali over the past two days by using the same method of entering houses under the pretext of cleaning utensils.

Police identified the arrested accused as Pawan Kumar and Nitish Kumar, both residents of Katihar district in Bihar.

Police sources said a specific case has been registered against the duo at Amtali police station, and they will be produced before the court on Thursday.
